Greg was born in Christchurch New Zealand, the son of Dutch parents. When he was six years of age his family made the big move to Australia. His father worked for a major pharmaceutical company and was promoted on a regular basis. So, Greg moved town and state every two to three years. This constant uprooting instilled in Greg a spirit of adventure.
It was quite by accident that he discovered photography.
Back in 1994, Greg and his wife Maria went on an extended holiday up the eastern coast of Australia from Melbourne to Cairns.
Greg was totally amazed at the beautiful coastline and started recording those memories with a compact camera that his sister gave him for the trip.
It became clear that Greg was not only developing a connection with the land, but also a fascination for recording it on film. Many years later Greg and Maria are still travelling Australia having more fun than ever on their ‘Journey of a Lifetime’.
Journey Of Lifetime
In the mid 1990’s, Greg Hoogstrate hatched an idea to pack a camera and begin photographing Australia. He set out to fulfill his dream of one day publishing his own book featuring magnificent images of Australian landscapes. After purchasing the finest panorama camera in the world and cashing in a few investments, there was no turning back.
The Greg Hoogstrate ‘Journey of a Lifetime’ began in 1998. When Greg and his wife, Maria packed their trusty four wheel drive and left behind the comfort of a suburban home and the safety of regular jobs, they sensed that their lives were about to change forever.
Since 1998, Greg and Maria have been a travelling team and have adapted well to ‘roughing it’ in the bush in some of Australia’s most spectacular country.
The lure of great photographic moments has kept Greg hungry and given him motivation to travel the many thousands of kilometres required to capture that one brief window of light.
Greg readily admits that he drastically underestimated the vast magnitude of this incredibly diverse and spectacular nation, not to mention the time frame required.
After some impressive reviews and much encouragement from the photographic industry, Greg Hoogstrate has now made a selection of stunning panoramic limited edition gallery photographs which are now available to the general public for purchase.
